It's the cruelty that breaks my heart. If shame hadn't been excised from the hearts of too many politicians, Zia Yusuf should be crawling with embarassment at such lazy, callous, rabble rousing.
who does it benefit? The recruitment agents who will receive a massive uptick in revenue as they get tasked with hiring the very same staff who were here before, but at a much higher price because it'll still be cheaper than training UK citizens
Dear Bear, thank you for your usual impressive analysis, so much better than anything I could dream of. Even more so as in my case I would have been attempting to string words together through a very red mist.
I read about this whilst drinking my wakeup coffee, to say I got close to needing to wash the TV is an understatement, I went from, of crap it is Monday morning straight to absolutely LIVID.
This is my wife and my (and thousands like us) lives that creature is talking about.
After I calmed down a little (only a little, I am still livid, just not shouting), I realised that in theory we should be ok, at least as long as naturalisation isn't wiped out as well, because that creature and the rest of his company are unlikely to be in power before my wife is able to apply for naturalisation.
However that may depend on what the rebranded Tories (labour) do, as they have already demonstrated a willing less to follow that pathetic company's lead.
Another cracking piece from you. We couldn’t resist doing our own spin on it this morning, we’ve been working on it since it was published yesterday, so hope you don’t mind us hitching a ride on the back of yours. We’ve also lobbed an email your way offering help and support, so do check the inbox (probably buried under spam about crypto and miracle pans). Thanks again, we’re with you all the way, and we massively appreciate what you do.
First they came for the immigrants and I did not speak out for I was not an immigrant…
I am, however, about to become the mother-in-law of a Ukrainian immigrant and was horrified that the conditions of her visa did not count towards settled status and, to obtain a spousal visa and one for her daughter, would cost, as you say, £10,000 each, including the NHS surcharge. They have been here for three and a half years and have built a life here.
I am also disabled and, while I would love to work, I cannot (believe me, I’ve tried). My PIP was stopped last month and it has been so stressful to mount an appeal. What would they do to me if they thought they could get away with it? At best leave us to starve to death or, at worst, take a leaf out of Kilmeade’s book and subject us to involuntary lethal injection?
And, then, where does it stop? All essential workers being forced to work more hours to boost their salary, so they don’t commit the sin of applying for Universal Credit? Just so employers can continue to pay poverty wages? Oh, and don’t get me started on the NHS. There are bodies of politicians, advisors and think tanks scratching their heads about why so many people are claiming sickness benefits. Has no one joined the dots that poor access to healthcare and social care will lead to prolonged suffering from treatable conditions and lower productivity?
Apparently a new runway at Gatwick will grow our economy *laughs hysterically*. The economy isn’t growing and people aren’t thriving because we have no f***ing money to spend. I was on PIP for ten years, and, despite how lucrative these benefits are (according to the Mail, of course) I still couldn’t afford a private jet.
So glad I got that off my chest. I’ll get off my soapbox now. Thank you, as always, Bear 🐻
The hint is in the name. If a govt, or any state body, is unable to stick to commitments previously made, it is not worthy of the name.
Note that undoing Settled Status is in breach of the UK/EU TCA and WA. Resiling will result in tariffs, sanctions and a severe break with the EU....but one suspects this is what Farage wants, as it gives him another reason to blame someone else for his decisions
Another mind numbing headline grabbing piece of garbage from Deform. Unfortunately the media will promote this, without question, implying it’s true, but sensible people know that it’s far from true.
The deranged fools that follow Farage, Robinson and Trumps abhorrent ideology will hopefully realise that this is wrong. However, I won’t hold my breath waiting.
If that individual ever gets into power, he won’t need to deport me… I’ll go of my own volition! I wouldn’t want to stay in a country going down that path… I’ve been here since 1969 and the whole of my life and family is here, but that would just be one straw too many.
"I’m a migrant. Or rather, I was. Sometimes I’m not quite 100% sure what my classification is"
You're British, Bear :o)
Welcome!
You are first Generation British.
As a Carer of a disabled person on Universal Credit - born in the UK, degree educated, married and widowed in the UK and resident in Scotland, I think its fair to say you have more 'Rights' as a citizen than either myself or my son have! (We can't even get ID, as a consequence, vote, or use the Banking system without constant surveillance).
Excellent piece highlighting Classic Reform tactics. “Boriswave” a snappy buzz word with inbuilt division and the action will be “staggered” meaning we may or may not be able to carry out what we have said. So get the votes from cult members and then forget about it while we plunder the treasury! That’s what they are doing in the local councils.
The problem is this argument won’t persuade reform voters in 3 years. The centre needs to lead on the economy and not fight a war they can’t win on immigration. Pretending that the uk hasn’t had the biggest wave of uncontrolled immigration in our history pushed through by Boris will not work
"This is the wave Reform wants to unleash - and if it comes in, it won’t stop with migrants.
It never does."
And this is what should scare people. there is always an Other with this lot. They could deport every single migrant in one hit, tomorrow, and they'll just move onto the next metaphorical punch bag. Single mothers, disabled people, the neurodivergent, cat owners, gingers. They only function with an Other to get you good and angry, so you don't look at the real issue: the obscene wealth that's bankrolling them.
"We send the EU £350 million a week, let's fund our NHS instead"
A propaganda symbol, a completely manufactured number (Cummings), paired with the claim that external forces were the cause of UK failures.
Ironic that it was a German bus, but we’ll skip over that for now.
Also ironic that McSweeney and company are intentionally driving the UK into the maw of Farage’s fascism.
Yes… I know Nigel has tried to buff away his sharp public edges, but scratch him and he still offers all the darkness of UKIP private club snarlings from his previous persona.
If (when at this point) Reform is installed, it will follow the pattern of the farther right version of conservatism (fascism, in most modern examples) replacing the failed Centre Right neoliberals who argued that they would restore a society to a (collapsing) status quo. US / FR / DE etc. have either completed or are in the midst of this process. Canada’s trying hard to follow. Remember that Carney guy and his “Neoliberal HARDER” Markets Uber Alles approach to the UK economy?
The truthfulness of Reform’s blame-and-shame propaganda is irrelevant. If one number or policy is proven false or impossible, they always have a reason. The Courts, “wokeness”, the Browns, the Blacks, the Trans, the Jews (sorry, “Globalists”), etc. Accountability never rests in this whack-a-mole game. Everyone just gets angrier and more fearful with each public failure.
Britain still has the mechanisms to pull itself out of the Fasch-Spiral, though Starmer and Company both refuse to use them and, in fact, are employing the austerity tactics known to drive populations into authoritarianism.
Retaining Sterling as a fiat currency allows you guys opportunities not available to Eurozone states. Unfortunate that nobody seems willing to take advantage of those opportunities.
My guess is that the current iteration of Labour won’t last through the end of 2025 due to upcoming revelations. But that’s just based on an outsiders view.
Though I’m an outsider with close ties to Scotland and the Brit Indie press, so… don’t tell anyone 🤫
Thanks for your efforts. You write well and obviously from the heart.
I’ve lived in London for 16 years so I remember when shortly after the Brexit referendum Theresa May urged companies to publish a list of non-British employees, which didn’t go down well and prompted immediate comparisons with a certain practice in Germany in the first half of the XX century. Brexit has caused immense problems in terms of recruiting international talent in the UK, which has always been one of the key elements attracting business to expand here. On top of that British SMEs find themselves paying lots of money to sponsor visas for high-skilled workers they didn’t need to sponsor before and which struggle to source here. The UK already has a serious shortage of talent and key workers so jeopardising the situation of those of us who contribute to paying taxes and keep the economy going doesn’t seem very wise to me. Hopefully others will see it too before it’s too late.
I'm with you all the way dear Bear 🐻. I had no idea how expensive it was! I'm totally gobsmacked! Farage and his vile right wing cabal is stirring up racial hatred yet again. People with half the brain cells of an amoeba are following, thinking they are being patriotic. It's really disturbing. I'm sharing this to Facebook in the hope that even one person realises how vile Reform is. I'm so sorry that you feel your security is being pulled out from under your feet. You are a shining example of how much people from other countries give to the UK. Thank you for everything you do, sending you much love ❤️ xxxxxx
It's even more expensive now, assuming no further price increases (I'll keep dreaming), it will have cost us £15k for the same journey by the time we finish sometime next year.
Part of that is the annual increase in application fees (currently £1034 for a renewal), but mostly the IHS (immigration health surcharge) which nearly doubled a couple of years ago from £624 to £1035 per year.
It's the cruelty that breaks my heart. If shame hadn't been excised from the hearts of too many politicians, Zia Yusuf should be crawling with embarassment at such lazy, callous, rabble rousing.
Zia Yusuf’s parents are from Sri Lanka is he going to deport them?
And will they take him with them?
I bloody hope so 😂😂😂

SETTLED status.
INDEFINITE leave to remain.

That’s a rare combination nowadays.
All the best.
