I have no leg to stand on, Bear. I too am an Apple Tart. Enjoy your new Mac and always remember what hard work went behind acquiring it. And, yes, I think your husband deserves a medal for his patience and dedication to your crazy quests ❤️

Oh, dear Bear ( not Oh dear, Bear), I feel your ardour for things Apple, and CEX, although I haven’t got to the lengths you appear to have (never been to Royal Tunbridge Wells either, but…), I am typing this on my 5th iPhone (an SE 2025 I think) I also have 3 iPads, the oldest of which is glacially slow, but streams Radio Caroline to my stereo, and the next oldest I took to the Apple Store earlier this year to have the battery replaced. Now bear (no pun intended) in mind, I had booked the appointment for this particular operation, and travelled nearly 2 hours via public transport (bus and train) to make said rendezvous, to be told face to face that batteries in IPads are not replaceable. Imagine the level of “why the fk couldn’t your website have told me, and saved me the aggravation?” I had going on just behind my eyes at this “kid”.

I waited a second or two, and thought about my sole progeny who, of a similar age to the one before me, had strived for a living for nearly 5 years in the CEX where I had previously lived.

“Oh, that’s a shame” I heard myself saying “How much is a new one?” Upon being told a new model was releasing in the next week, I bought one there and then, and awaited delivery at home - hence 3 iPads, the middle one still gets used for some things, and the new one is slowly taking over in the house - meanwhile, the previously unmentioned iMac gifted to me by my sister a year or so ago, sits unloved no, unused, upstairs in the spare bedroom - it’s lovely but no longer updates (why I ended up with it in the first place), but now my Windows 10 desktop doesn’t either, they may swap placed in my house and my affections…enjoy your new second user Apple product and have a great week, I will be using my middle iPad later today as a lyric prompter for an afternoon gig with my band!

I am now on my nth refurbed MacBook Pro. I've had one white plastic and at least three silver models, all purchased by Mr Chazer for under £500 each. All my files are in the cloud, so I can move between the two machines which are currently serviceable depending on how the system feels. I will eventually lose Google Drive on this one (2013) but for now I'm still using it. 2020 version is set up and works, ready for when this one joins the pile in the corner of Mr C's mancave.

I am not an Apple tart. I can just about operate an OG iPod. But in comparison to the second hand Windows machines I've used, these refurbed Macs are light years better. I have had a longer life out of a refurbed £250 MacBook than I did out of a new Acer Aspire that cost at least twice as much.

I am crying laughing 🤣. I am no techie, but I get the " must have" thing. My weakness is art and craft stuff. I'm obsessed. Thank you so much for making my sides ache this morning. Happy Sunday darling Bear 🐻 and condolences to your lovely husband 😘 ❤️ 💕 ♥️ 💙 💖 😘 xxxxxxxxxxx

Ahhhh.... (((Bear))) wrote the Android user ;-) But I do enjoy an apple every evening, especially if it's tart and crunchy! My addiction however, is for charity shops! Every village, town, city and country I visit, is an opportunity to find a charity shop to explore. Here I'll find wonderful bargain outfits, books, items to use and display! Total heaven :-) Xx

Cex

Shrugs (from your hubby)

& Rotten Rolls (the burgers)

Could well have been the title of this one Bear.

I don't have the same affliction as you but I understand you completely because I have used Cex to pass forward those tech items that I don't use anymore, at present I've got a voucher for £98 which will in time be used for an Xbox upgrade.

Recently I've been passing forward my auld techy stuff through the local computer shop which has actually given me a higher cash in hand than Cex would and also it saves me having to travel anywhere.

The passing forward of any tech stuff is a good thing because it makes space. 😉

Ah, Bear, I grew up in Tunbridge Wells (via Iran, but that's another story). It was pretty damn posh in those days. I went to the Girls Grammar, my brother to The Skinner's School where everyone was called by their surname and we weren't allowed to mix with the boys from the Tech.

On a school visit to the Stock Exchange our Headmistress told us to look down onto the trading floor. 'That's where you will find your husbands, girls' she announced. A bit regressive I thought. Surely it should have been 'you can build a career there too'. My first schoolgirl activism happened in Tunbridge Wells when I lobbied for soft toilet paper - successful - and for typing to be taught - unsuccessful. 'You are not destined to be secretaries', the Headmistress told me indignantly, 'why do you need to learn to type?'. Why indeed!

I can still remember the outcry when McDonalds sought planning permission for a restaurant. Many threw themselves onto the fainting sofa believing the end of civilisation was nigh.

In those days it was the bastion of independent shops - Weekes department store, Mary Lee for those long dressesmy mum wore to dinner parties, the shop where we had to buy our school uniform. Monson Road swimming pool, the coffee roasting shop that made the whole road smell divine. The Assembly Hall where I dumped my ne'er do well boyfriend for Alan, one of the local cool guys from the Boys Tech at a Smokey concert. Davinci was the only nightclub until Carriages came along - strangely burned to the ground in what was widely believed to be a insurance job. A CEX shop would have been an outrage as was the sex shop that opened briefly 🤣

In those days you could put a blue rosette on a floor mop and it would get elected. Now its gone Liberal Democrat but Labour is still a dirty word.

It's a pale imitation of its former self and I haven't been back for about 20 years. It's a shame really but that's progress. Thanks for indulging my trip down Memory Lane.

I too work on Apple devices and have a number that really could/should go to their heavenly rest (or equivalent). I've never heard of CEX though -- and it sounds very much like something the my OH would enjoy. I will check out whether there is one in the wilds of Somerset.

"Off we went, the Mini loaded"

This made me laugh - from the bundles of tech you had been running around to collect I expected a van!

Oh bless you Bear, my son would absolutely relate.

Moi? I do too for I will proudly declare, in public for the first time, am a Gudrun Sjoden addict :o) I do exactly the same as you but with dresses. LOL I have a huge number of clothes, bags, and girly accoutrements. It keeps us sane, in our madness. And damn. It looks so good! :o)

I know that ‘Apple addict’ thing. Had it ever since I sat in an auditorium with 499 others only to realise that I was the only one with a StinkPad and wondering what planet I’d landed upon.

Bear. Been all Apple since the year 2000.

Maybe we should start a support group.

The packaging! Smoother than a baby’s skin and for the tactile amongst us, a luxury in itself. God knows how much it costs…

I, too, share your addiction to anything Apple but, unlike you, I paid full price for shiny new, iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, iPod, iPad Pro, iPhone 16, Watch… the whole gamut! And a Wacom Cintiq 24”.That was when I was being paid rather handsomely for what I do (digital artist) and I could afford it… only the best for me!!! 😂 Thing is, they’re going to have to last because there is no way I’m ever going to be able to replace any of them now I have, technically, retired… I still do artwork both digitally and traditionally because I enjoy it, not because I need to make a living at it and the technology I have is totally fine for that!
