As an archaeologist I was fortunate to work in Rome and Verona, my favourite memory is of the pizzas slightly different from Sainsbury’s frozen efforts.
My memory of Verona is of sitting, eating pizza on the piazza, watching everyone cycle around. We’d been working in the coliseum putting in the Simple Minds gig that became ‘Verona’ & had a couple of free days before taking the kit out. It was bliss.
Verona is the only opera house in the world where scene changes are carried out by tower crane!
Get yourselves to Mussolini’s cattle market. Designed to be the biggest in Europe. Beautiful buildings now mostly used by the art and architectural departments of the University, great murals in the area, food markets and restaurants. Especially one specialising in offal
Have a great time! One of my abiding memories of Rome was seeing a group of policemen on motorbikes doing formation wheelies all the way up the Via della Conciliazione towards St Peters. Quite bizarre!

Enjoy Rome, Saint Peter's Basillica is a definate must. Also get to the Spanish Steps and try the gelato.

Went to Rome last year and loved it for much the same reasons. Amatriciana now a staple diet - has to be with buccatini pasta.
Enoteca Corsi strongly recommended for simple Roman food and wine in great atmosphere. And drink the local wine with the amatriciana - Cesanesi
You have to try the melenzana pasta (might have spelt it wrong) (aubergine) - imo it’s the best.
Try to see Nero’s buried palace too.

Whilst you're enjoying yourself, I strongly recommend that you keep a close eye on your personal belongings.
The locals are rather good at relieving people of the above.
