Replying as a now too old hobby sailor, the RNLI is a fantastic group of local expert seamen who turn out day or night to the sound of a cannon, get in their boat and set out regardless of the weather conditions and are then told who is at risk and where. They are VOLUNTEERS who do it for the sake of whoever is in trouble on the sea. If these people diminish their numbers, hundreds of victims of the sea will die each year, including children just playing on inflatables at the beach. This evil disinformation must stop. Purveyors of this hate should be prosecuted for potentially endangering life. The RNLI like the NHS is a uniquely British institution of which we should all be proud.
Just donated, as I do every time these people raise their ugly heads. I know many others do the same. I wonder, do they realise they are heading an unofficial RNLI fundraising campaign?
Hopefully the friends and neighbours of these brave men and women will rally round and support them in their hour of need. I’m confident they will.
Given that this is a relatively small island, whose occupants seem to enjoy spending time in and on the surrounding water, I have always been quite surprised that the RNLI IS run as a charity, rather than as an organisation like the fire or ambulance services.
I think they're wonderful and am a long time supporter.
Asking them to check the 'status' of someone in need of rescue is ridiculous and puts everyone involved at more risk. The ONLY way to operate is to rescue everyone (if possible) & sort out the admin later.

I'm pondering how it might work - and there is a very small conversation on Bluesky about that if you're interested . Allegedly there was a meet up of potential thugs just up the M40 from us so they don't just congregate on the South coast....but telling the police and benefits people is a good move!
I'm a scuba diver, with almost all of my diving having been done off the west coast of Scotland. RNLI are a vital service for everyone who goes to sea. The idea that Farage and his cronies are about to kick off against RNLI is sufficient that I think another donation to them might be in order.

Having had a stupid friend who had to be rescued by the RNLI when he decided to ignore warnings from his friends about tides, I’ve always donated & used their shop. (Excellent Xmas cards, by the way). They didn’t ask him where he was from when they fished him out. All this far right hate HAS to stop & the Govt MUST do something about it before it’s too late. I think they’re taking advantage of a rookie MP but Burnham needs to get a grip.
I am getting tired of using the word 'abhorrent' in relation to these thugs and bullies. As former boat owners we have a Standing Order for donating to RNLI but will be making an extra donation today - also - might not help immediately but we have included a sum for them in our wills - hopefully they will still be going by then.

These obnoxious people that would happily endanger the lives of these brave men and women might need them one day and where would they be if the RNLI were no longer there to save their miserable skins? I know these people are only a minority but it saddens my heart to see this once proud country being infiltrated by this kind of scum and I hope sanity will prevail and send it back to the sewers where it belongs.
I have no words for my despair, loathing and contempt for the lies and misinformation that underlies(!) all this shit. The RNLI has always been one the the most unreservedly loved and admired institutions in the UK. Saving lives at sea is simply A Good Thing, and would be a good thing even if the lives were Martian space-aliens. These fascists will destroy any and everything that makes life wort living before they're finished. OK, I had some words.
Nigel Farage is happy to tell us how much he needs his £5million gift as he is persecuted and his life is at risk. So what of the people so desperate they risk their lives to cross the channel because they are fleeing persecution… unfortunately I could not give £5 million but I donated to the RNLI this morning as soon as I heard about this latest twist to the dehumanising rhetoric that we are subjected to each day.

RNLI is part of the fabric of our society akin to other volunteer services like the St Johns Ambulance, RVS and many others that the right wing would disband
