I left X many months ago as it was far too toxic for me. It would appear to be even worse now. Musk is an egomaniac who has the power for good but the desire for hate and division. He and his sidekicks tiny tommeh and our nige are directly responsible for the shocking scenes in Belfast. They all should be arrested for inciting violence, but of course they won't be. They deliberately set it up, stand back, smile, and watch the destruction.
Yes, Ofcom should ban X, but it never will. It won't even censure GB"news" when actual politicians spout lie after lie, never mind there are meant to be rules about politicians and TV programmes. Like all the Of's; Ofgen, Ofwat, etc, it behaves like a toothless entity with no power to act at all.
I can remember the discussions around ISPs and what they were responsible for in the early days of the internet. Back then, as the ISPs didn't host any of the content, they were deemed not responsible for what people had access to. Social Media is now not just storing and managing content; they also control what is pushed and shown to users; they are responsible for content. When it comes to illegal content, they are all slow in removing it; however, X / Twitter has shown that it will ignore laws where it suits it and is willing to promote illegal content and how it is generated. The site needs to be banned, not due to censorship, but for illegal practices, including the generation of sexualised images without consent, and for child abuse.
X was the go-to platform because it was the only one of its kind so we landed there at some point, whatever our interest(s) for going there was. Mind have always been ecclectic and that continues over at Bsky.
Twitter was already slipping into cesspit mode even before the grotesque creature known as EM took over. Banning it is one thing but it's not enough. Before that happens which could take months, or years (if it happens), anyone in some form of power, and journalists, should get off it pronto. No more excuses (coms, visibility etc.).
X however is only one aspect of a whole package of controlling apps in the hands of, well, I'm not even sure how to qualify these large politico-economic interests out there. I welcome the burgeonning initiatives by some European countries to move out of Microsoft's control. We could do it too if we weren't tied by contracts and licences which are also controlling how we work and collecting data about what we do (even if anonymised).
Definitely should be banned. This country is upside down. The effort taken to ban things associated with Palestine and the weaponisation of anti semitism and they can’t do anything about x? As you say these activities are actually illegal and always have been. No brainer.
I banned both X and Facebook from my house for being the sewers both were quickly becoming and I would welcome a UK-wide ban on both, but more especially X. Musk took one of the better social media platforms that used to be known as Twitter and turned it into the physical manifestation of the shithole that is his mind.
No self-respecting government should even wish to be associated with that!
Yes, Musk is a direct threat to the national security of the UK. He is, or appear to, intent on fomenting serious civil disorder in the UK, hence the British Government need to treat him as a potential hostile actor, and act accordingly. Sure, he'll shout "censorship, freedom of speech", and all his usual phrases. If a ban on X is the answer, then ban it, and face down the critics!
I stopped opening X posts a long time ago when it became distorted into a hate channel with mindless swearing and horrible one line insulting comments.
I'm all in favour of regulation, but what would actually work if *liability*
Ask the internet platforms hide behind the "Common Carrier" regulations, crystallised in the DCMA and it's international equivalents around 1999/2000. This said ISPs and platforms are like BT. The don't editorialise or discriminate between traffic or users.

Whether it be the Facebook feed or Xitter's algorithms, it is not a neutral medium.
The editorialise like newspapers and magazines. A newspaper that published a mocked up photo of a 14 year old girl would be sued by her family, and probably prosecuted under child pornography laws.
It’s long overdue a ban, imo. It’s dangerous, anti-democratic, misogynistic & the right are using it as a tool of disinformation & destabilisation.
