A year after quitting the platform that helped grow my audience, I went back to see what had changed. The answer was: not much, except perhaps the darkness.
At the time you were considering leaving Twitter I recall encouraging you here and I’ve never regretted it. Leaving the cesspit is a sign of maturity and a respect for others. At my age (senior citizen) my mental state has to be protected and I believe mainly intelligent people are here. Continue with your return to sanity Bear and keep up with your wonderful turn of phrase.
I’m with you 🐻. I haven’t been back on twitter much at all lately. I go back on occasionally to catch up with a couple of people, but that’s it really. I much prefer being here. I have blocked one person on here in a year, rather than the hundreds I blocked on twitter. And that block here was someone who just wanted a fight that I didn’t want to have! I followed you here 🐻, and I don’t regret it one bit. I don’t always comment, but I always read what you write, and as long as you’re writing I’ll be here with you.
Fully understand your reasons for leaving Twitter Bear. For me, Twitter has always been about a community of people who like and help animals and admire/respect NHS workers. I have stayed to see animal videos, help find lost and stolen pets and follow animal charities as they battle to keep funds coming in. Also to follow NHS frontline workers who battle with their everyday issues, such as doctors' strikes and the increase in employment of "Noctors". Since Musk took over though and named it X, it has been harder to view such posts and I find myself regularly blocking non animal and responders to NHS content when I can see it. As many of the people have not moved over to Bluesky yet (I am also active on Bluesky) I stay. Not sure for how much longer though.....

My proudest moments were - a comment on one of my posts from Prof Brian Cox - and the occasional like and comments from you! You really were one of my faves on Twitter.
And then it became such a cesspit…. I left a bit before you and absolutely concur that it was the best thing to have done.

I haven’t left a comment on here yet, since I also left the cesspit, I’ve felt much happier, less threatened, less stressed and angry. I still fight on instagram, I can’t give up opposing the racists, but it’s only for a short amount of time now. I do read your musing though Bear. I miss our little chats. I stay in touch with Carol on insta. I’m glad you’re doing better now. Seeing the horrendous comments was getting to much leaving was the right and best thing I’ve done x
Good call Bear. I also left BlueSky. While obviously lacking the abusive racists of X it has also become noticeably more abusive in the last year or so, and there’s no room there either for nuance or respectful debate. Very early signs I’m afraid of Substack showing similar tendencies, but just a speck in the rear view mirror for now.

I deleted my Twitter account when Elon Musk bought it. Can’t be doing any of his shit tbh
